Beer-drinking champs win half a million pesos



What do a policeman, an airport porter, a cockfighting arena assistant and an insurance manager have in common? A deep love for San Miguel Beer and P500,000 in tax-free winnings. "Samahang Magbabarkada", composed Jojo Molato, Roberto Nieto, Romy de los Reyes, and Wendell Salatandre, all from Puerto Princesa, Palawan, was crowned the country's fastest beer-drinking barkada at the recent 10th San Miguel Beer National Beer Drinking Contest grand finals.

The event, held at the MEZ1 Open Field in Cebu City, drew 26,363 competing teams from all over the country and around 7,000 spectators. The team, which set a new record of 56.6 seconds to finish 5 bottles of SMB, beat the two-time defending champions from the Visayas. (Extreme left) SMB national sales manager Debie D. Namalata led the awarding ceremony together with (L-R) brewing technology group manager Rebecca S. Flores, deputy chief finance officer Motoyasu Ishihara, chief finance officer Mercy Marie L. Amador, human resources and business affairs and communications head Enrico E. Reyes, territory sales manager roland Gomez and sales supervisor Romy Manaig. Beermen's Dondon Hontiveros and Chris Calaguio also graced the event.
