SMB's tree-planting drive continues to support National Greening Program
From Luzon to Mindanao, San Miguel Brewery Inc. continues to rehabilitate denuded forest cover through the Trees Brew Life, the company's annual tree-planting initiative in the whole month of August.
SMB is firm in its resolve to spread awareness on the importance of protecting critical watershed areas, according to SMB President Roberto N. Huang. This year, Huang said he was happy to learn that relatives of employees and some of our business partners joined the tree-planting activity.
Huang said the activities of the company, such as its Trees Brew Life program were geared towards the vision of its parent San Miguel Corp., the most diversified conglomerate of the Philippines.
“We should not stop making our world better because that is the challenge for us, every single waking day,” he said.
Since the inception of its Trees Brew Life program in 2010, SMB has planted more than 450,000 seedlings of hardwood, mangrove and fruit-bearing trees in Cagayan Valley, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, Camarines Sur, Palawan, Tacloban, Iloilo and Cebu province, in addition to areas where the company's facilities are located.
The Buhayin ang Kalikasan flagship environmental program remains to be a top priority in SMB's social development agenda, according to Huang. Implemented in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and LGUs, as well as NGOs, civic associations, business groups, media partners and surrounding communities, the company aspires to ensure the availability of water supply by protecting, preserving and rehabilitating forest covers, regenerating of mangrove areas and propagating of planting materials.
The tree planting initiative is also in line with the government's National Greening Program, a key priority of President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III.
Likewise, the company aims to help in reforestation, increasing mangrove density, developing plant nurseries and building up the capabilities of communities through a sustained environmental information drive.
For this year, SMB planted seedlings in key areas where it operates. It devoted all Saturdays of August for its Trees Brew Life program.
On Aug. 2, the company kicked off its environmental campaign in Mandaue City, Cebu, planting seedlings at the Mandaue Bridge Park which SMB helped spruce up with partners in the private sector and the local government.
On Aug. 9, the tree planting activity continued in City of San Fernando, Pampanga, planting at SMC San Fernando Complex. The following week, on Aug. 16, the company brought its campaign to Brgy. Estefania in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.
On Aug. 23, the tree planting activity happened along the South Luzon Expressway in Calamba, Laguna. The Laguna leg was done in partnership with the Manila Toll Expressway System.
On Aug. 30, SMB's tree planting season drew to a close in Brgy. Matina Pangi in Davao City and in Brgy. Pinugay, Baras, Rizal, with employees from the National Office, Polo Brewery and GMA Sales joining forces to plant over 2,000 seedlings at a reservation area which formed part of the Marikina River Watershed.
